Course Descriptions

Parents, please be safe and resist the natural impulse to place your child in a ‘higher” group.   If your child is ‘on the fence’ between levels, or if you are unsure of your child’s water competency, please place your child in the lower level.   This wise approach will not hinder your child’s progress, or opportunity to progress through the MSS levels, as our small groups allow for individual attention.   Not honoring this philosophy can be traumatic to your child and disruptive to the class. Adjustments can be made by moving a child up a level.   It is esteem building to be moved up verses down a level and we like to have positive outcomes!

WATERBABIES (Ages 6 months to 3 years)

This class is designed for a parent and their child.

At this young age it is a great opportunity to introduce your baby to the joy and fun of the water. Through exploration and age appropriate games, your child will learn about buoyancy and beginning breath control. Each activity is geared toward specific learning processes.   We use interaction with others in an enjoyable learning atmosphere that utilizes play, happy songs, creative expressions, self-discovery and independent thinking to achieve the goals of the lesson.
This fun, structured class facilitates the learning process through movement, sound, visual and tactile stimulation.

AQUATOTS (Ages 16 months to 3 years)

This class is designed for a parent and their child.

Through happy songs and fun games, the AQUATOT learns socialization skills, water safety, gross motor skills, peer motivation and self-esteem.   The student begins exploring breath control, buoyancy and balance.   Skills are learned and practiced through the use of rhythm, lyrics and repetition.

** Please note: All swimmers under the age of 3 are required to wear a swim diaper.

PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN AGES 3 TO 5 YEARS

EXPLORERS (Usually ages 3 to 4 years)

My child is not yet comfortable getting their face wet / first time in swimming lessons.

This class is for first timers to MARLIN SCHOOL OF SWIMMING (MSS)  for 3 and 4 year olds. Children with little water experience or who are uneasy about going under water. This class is a semi-private class (two students) designed for your child’s success in becoming a happy swimmer. This introduction is the foundation of their swimming journey and will accelerate your swimmer and prepare them for the next level.  We work on breath control and assisted float on front and back and happy attitudes!   Come with a friend and double your fun.

STARFISH (Ages 3 to 5 years)

My child is comfortable getting putting their face in the water but does not fully submerge underwater on their own yet.

SEAHORSE (Ages 3 to 5 years)

My child going underwater by themselves but CANNOT yet float by his/her self.  (this is the level to select if your child cannot float on both the front AND back or only “swims” using floaties.)

MINNOW (Ages 3 to 5 years)

My child can float independently on their front AND can kick on their stomach a short distance.  My child has not yet learned to independently float on their back. They are learning their beginning stroking motions.

SEA TURTLE (Ages 4 to 5 years)

My child can float independently on BOTH their front and back. They are learning rollover breathing.

Good stroke fundamentals make for an efficient stroke. Perfect practice makes perfect.

SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN AGES 6 YEARS AND OVER

OTTER (Ages 6 to 10 years)

My child can kick on their stomach for 15 feet with their face in the water. Needs help learning proper strokes.

DOLPHIN (Ages 6 and over)

My child can swim crawl stroke with efficient technique. (high elbows and body roll for 20 feet in one breath)  My child has learned the basics to the Elementary Backstroke, Breaststroke, Dolphin kick and Backstroke.

Must have graduated from MSS SEA TURTLE class or OTTER class or have the necessary equal skills.

Focus: Perform rotary breathing with the front crawl/freestyle.   This requires an understanding that refinement of stroke form takes concentration and body awareness.   Also continued work on backstroke, elementary backstroke, breaststroke and dolphin kick.   A lot of fine-tuning is done at this level.

At each level, we are setting a foundation.  Each age group has new and more complex skills compatible with the developmental abilities of that group.   This level has complex skills and may take several sessions to progress through these skills sets.

Be patient as your child adapts, makes subtle modifications and begins achieving these key stepping stones to efficient strokes.

Practice does not make perfect, Perfect practice makes perfect.

STINGRAY  (Ages 8 and over)

My child has good form in rotary breathing to the side to Freestyle/crawl, front breathing to Breaststroke, can swim the Elementary Backstroke, Back Crawl, Dolphin kick and is confident treading water for 30 seconds and swimming in deep water for 15 minutes.  They can swim nonstop for 40 feet.

Must have graduated from MSS DOLPHIN class: or have the necessary equal skills.

Focus: Refining all the pieces together for the front crawl /freestyle, resting and racing breaststroke, back crawl, and elementary backstroke for efficiency in the water. Exhibit confident, smooth strokes in both shallow and deep water. This process entails perfecting arms, breathing, and stroke timing in association with head and body rotation.   Skills to develop Butterfly, treading water, scissors kick and deep-water work are implemented in this program.

As with the DOLPHIN level, this level has new and more complex skills compatible with the developmental abilities of this group.   The complexity and timing required to achieve skills and may take several sessions to progress through these skills sets.

Be patient as your child adapts, makes subtle modifications and begins achieving these key stepping stones to efficient strokes.

ORCA  (Ages 9 and over)

My child has good technique in the competitive form of Freestyle, resting and racing Breaststroke with proper breath timing, Back Crawl, and Elementary Backstroke, beginning skills for the Butterfly, Scissors kick, confident treading water for 1 minute and swimming in deep water for 30 minutes. They can swim 80 feet nonstop.

Must have graduated from MSS STINGRAY class: or have the necessary skills equal skills.

Focus: Continue developing stroke skills and efficiency. Students learn butterfly and refine all competitive strokes adding Sidestroke and timed endurance swims.

MARLIN (Ages 10 and over)

Upon instructor recommendation only.

Students learn how to effectively incorporate techniques to utilize the momentum of the stroke to its maximum.  With the emphasis of our program being centered on the core body, skills and drills are still practiced to strengthen the integrity of each stroke.

  • This is a mastery class, can be repeated several times to refine each stroke
  • Creating more efficiency in treading water, scissor kick, sidestroke, deep underwater swimming and timed endurance swims
  • Understanding what isolated drills work on and how to put together a workout or practice routine and what to concentrate on for their individual needs
  • Advanced safety skills are taught
  •  Timed 3 1/2 minute swim in good form.

Students are now proficient in 6 strokes; they are learning how to refine their body positioning to improve hydrodynamic states.   They build endurance and learn lifesaving skills.

Upon achieving this level your child will have skills for a lifetime. If interested in swim team information speak with one of our staff for details.

CREATE YOUR OWN SEMI PRIVATE OR PRIVATE LESSONS.

With Private or Semi-private lessons we can accommodate special needs of students at any level.   This works well for students that do not fall within our levels or that have little formal water experience or who are uneasy about going under water or does not yet have an independent glide.   We have found that school age children at the beginning level excel quickly when taking their first session with us in a private or semi-private class enabling them to catch up in ability with their peers.
